Seventh Private Rightsizing Scheme announced in Limerick

The scheme at The Mills, Castletroy.

Are you a homeowner over the age of 55 and find your house too large for your needs? Limerick City and County Council may be able to help.

The local authority has a new scheme where homeowners older than 55 who find their dwellings too large for them, may request the council to purchase their home in return for a life-long tenancy in a managed Older Persons Scheme.

The Private Rightsizing scheme is entirely voluntary and in partnership with Circle Voluntary Housing Association. Circle Voluntary Housing Association is committed to providing high-quality housing, enabling people to continue to live independently for as long as possible in their own homes and maintain the connection they have with their community.

HOUSING SOLUTIONS

Launching the latest scheme located at The Mills, Castletroy, Mayor of the City and County of Limerick John Moran said: “Empowering older people to live independently while meeting the housing needs of our community is at the heart of this initiative. People have been pointing out to me the need for better options for “rightsizing” in Limerick. This is another small step in that direction. By creating new sustainable housing solutions we are not only addressing immediate needs but also laying the groundwork for a prosperous and inclusive future for all residents.”

Caroline Curley, Director of Housing in Limerick City and County Council noted the growing demand for the scheme.

“Limerick City and County Council and Circle Voluntary Housing Association are committed to empowering residents to live for as long as they possibly can in sustainable, high quality, affordable homes. Our joint ambition is to expand and improve housing options for people over the age of 55. Private rightsizing developments are close to public transport, services and activities that are inclusive of age friendly communities.

“Our aim is not just to help people wanting to transfer to a smaller home but to release larger 3 or 4 bedroom properties that are in high demand for families that need them most. The Council has an informal register of interest of just under 200 private households enquiring about rightsizing options. We are confident that there is significant latent demand for private rightsizing schemes”.
