Riordan’s SuperValu embraces ice bucket challenge

The internet doesn't always get a good press, however, from time to time, it does hit on a winner and great things follow.

A recent example is the ice bucket challenge which has raged across the country (and also internationally) for the last number of weeks and in the process raised (an estimated) €450,000 for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association. In our neck of the woods, it's been full steam (stream) ahead with no shortage of either buckets, water, ice or the all important volunteers - who are nominated by those who've gone before them.

Staff and management at the always busy Riordan's SuperValu in Fermoy weren't found wanting when their turn came and on Wednesday afternoon they did their bit for the cause - in this instance, it was agreed that proceeds be divided equally between the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association and St. Patrick's Community Hospital, Fermoy.

As is normally the case, the challenge attracts a substantial gathering and there was no shortage of bucket people to do the pouring. For the record those who got 'bucketed' were: Sean Cotter, Philip Quinn, Tony Fox, Colm Donnellan, Michael Riordan, Fiona McCarthy, Kay O'Regan and Vicky O'Donovan.

In a financial update, we can confirm that the venture raised €1,300 - which will be divided equally between the aforementioned causes. The good (bad) news is that Riordan's SuperValu have nominated the following for the ice bucket challenge: Fermoy Credit Union, Cavanagh's Garage Sales Personnel (Fermoy) and SuperValu in Carrick-On-Suir.

After that, all you can say is well done to those who've embraced the challenge and best of luck to future nominees.
