There's always plenty going on in The Avondhu's neck of the woods. Last weekend, it was the turn of history buffs to take centre stage and showcase what the Fermoy region has to offer in terms of archaeology, castles, churches, ancient texts, saints and scholars.

The substantial crowds who turned up in Fermoy Community Youth Centre quickly realised that Fermoy has a fascinating past - a past we are continuing to learn about thanks to the research of people like Eamonn Cotter from Rathcormac.

A consultant archaeologist, Eamonn takes great pleasure in sharing what he has learned and was delighted with how last weekend's event unfolded.

TOP SPEAKERS

"The interest and enthusiasm of those who attended was great to see, we were extremely fortunate to have secured the services of such excellent speakers, all the presentations were excellent," Eamonn told this publication at last Saturday night's conference dinner in The Grand Hotel.

Guest speaker was Fermoy native and Evening Echo editor, Maurice Gubbins. Maurice regaled the group with tales from his childhood before being presented with a very attractive spalted beech fruit bowl - the gift was produced by woodturner, Charley McCarthy - Donal O Lochlainn did the honours.

Having made such an auspicious debut in Fermoy, staging a similar conference in the future can't be ruled out. When it comes to our multi-layered past, Fermoy and its environs has countless stories to tell.
