As part of the successful Castletownroche Welcome Home Festival, the village honoured the members of the 1942 North Cork minor hurling championship winning team. At a function in the community hall, one of the invited guests was John J Buckley, who captained the losing Mallow team in the final. Each of the panel were presented with special Blackwater Crystal tankards, with Frank Nash, Nash’s Garage, sponsor of the occasion.
There was uproar in Fermoy following news that the developers of a proposed Chinese restaurant in the town had pulled out of the project. Local business people in the town stressed the town could suffer even further if people didn’t realise that “jobs were at stake”. To be located in the O’Rahilly Row area, several objections had been made to the planning, with particular concern over the take-away side of the business. This in turn led to the planning authority placing 15 restrictions on the proposed business, including no take-away facility, 25 car park spaces and a restriction on opening hours.
A meeting of the Doneraile Development Association saw the major topic of conversation being the future of Heatherside Hospital, which hung in the balance. According to Association PRO, Joe Hassett, calls for an open/public meeting were on hold, in order for the Southern Health Board to give a reply in relation to representations made on the matter. He stated that the Health Board’s promise for staff relocation would “take money out of the local economy”, and thus would be damaging. If a satisfactory reply was not forthcoming from the Health Board, the Association would call a public meeting.
Sixties music legend, Donovan, had just finished an album recording with Fermoy’s Brian O’Reilly, in his Fiona Studio. Based around the musical, The Children Of Lir, in all, 13 tracks were produced, including 6 sung by Donovan himself. The chorus was formed by girls from Sr Nuala’s music class in Loreto Secondary School and a Cork group, called Polyphonics. Other singers included Mary Farrell (Ballyduff), Geraldine Walsh (Kilworth) and Brian himself.
The recent erection of six new houses in Kildorrery by Cork County Council, on the site of the old Cow And Gate Creamery, came in for favourable comment. The project was completed by Rice Brothers Building Contractors, Fermoy and was a great fillip for the village, with a plaque erected on the corner site commemorating the establishment of Cow And Gate in Ireland. The inscription read: ‘Site of first Cow And Gate factory in Ireland 1887-1987. Founded by William Gates 1887.’
Nearly 150 years of Fermoy’s pictorial life was launched in a 64 page book, at a special function held in The Grand Hotel in August 1992. The production team of Norman and Ann-Marie Madden and Grainne O’Connor, were praised for the high quality work, which included 60 pictures dating back from a 1863 military pose to mid 1970s flooding. Ann Cowell, secretary of the town traders’ association, officially launched the book, while Christy Roche acted as MC on the night. It was hoped that this would be the first of a major series, with the towns of Mitchelstown and Mallow also to be covered.
