Planning granted for Fermoy weir

An Bord Pleanála have granted permission for the remediation of Fermoy Weir and the building of a fish bypass in the River Blackwater in the town, a decision which has been broadly publicly welcomed by politicians and local groups, most prominently by the activist group, ‘Save Fermoy Weir’.

Releasing a statement on behalf of the group shortly after the decision was made public, Tommy Lawton and Paul Kavanagh said the long-awaited decision was very welcome. Speaking with The Avondhu on Tuesday afternoon this week, Mr Kavanagh, who is also the secretary for Fermoy Rowing Club, said that the group had been instrumental in getting the approval carried over the line.

“We’re down about a metre and a half of water depth in the summer, and we’re the people who’ve been fighting for this; we’re delighted with the news”.
