Family and friends assembled recently to mark the 100th birthday of Peg Hanrahan from Corracunna, at The Firgrove Hotel in Mitchelstown. The memorable occasion saw loved ones travel in force from Canada, Dublin, Kildare, Wexford and Limerick, along with locals, to celebrate this unique occasion for the loveable family matriarch.
Peg Hanley was born on 29th June, 1925 in the middle of a decade dubbed the Roaring Twenties. Calvin Coolridge was president of the United States, Stanley Baldwin was British Prime Minister, while the leader of the Catholic Church was Pope Pius X1. Ireland was still getting over the effects of the Civil War and William T. Cosgrave was president of the Executive Council of the Free State.
Peg was the youngest of a family of eight, two of whom – Patrick and Danny – passed away in infancy; in all four girls Annie, Maura, Bridie and Peg and two boys, Billie and Jackie, all now deceased. Their parents were Daniel and Margaret.
