The Cork Person of the Month for July has been named as Patricia Messinger of C103’s ‘Cork Today’, to mark her outstanding contributions to broadcasting, community engagement and humanitarian efforts.

With an illustrious career spanning nearly 35 years at C103, Patricia has become a beloved figure in Cork and beyond. Her dedication to delivering insightful discussions on current affairs, combined with her infectious personality, has earned her a loyal following among listeners.

Patricia’s journey into broadcasting began at a young age, fuelled by her passion for radio. A native of Clonmel, Co Tipperary, she took part in an RTÉ production when the national broadcaster visited her local national school. She credits RTÉ presenter Vincent Hanley, from her home townl, as one of the reasons she got into radio.

Over the years, she has become a staple in the Cork community, providing a platform for important discussions and lending her support to various charitable causes.

COMMITMENT ‘TRULY COMMENDABLE’

Beyond her role as a broadcaster, Patricia’s impact extends to humanitarian efforts. Her involvement with the Chernobyl Children International Project led her to Belarus, where she became personally involved in improving the lives of orphaned children. Her experiences in Belarus deeply impacted her, leading her to adopt her daughter, Marsha, who she has lovingly cared for over the years.

“Patricia Messinger embodies the essence of community engagement, entertainment and compassion,” said awards organiser, Manus O’Callaghan. “Her commitment to informing and supporting her audience, both through her radio programme and her philanthropic endeavours, is truly commendable.”

Reflecting on her career, expressed her unwavering dedication to radio, “I eat, sleep, and breathe radio. It’s not just a job for me; it’s a passion. Every day presents new challenges and opportunities to connect with our audience, and I am grateful for the privilege to be a part of their lives,” she said.

In 2021, Patricia was inducted into the Irish Radio’s Hall of Fame. With her outstanding record of 35 years behind the microphone at C103, Patricia Messenger continues to inspire and uplift her listeners, cementing her legacy as one of Cork’s most cherished broadcasters. Patricia, together with her producer JP McNamara, also picked up a Justice Media Award this June for their work highlighting the importance of family mediation.

Patricia’s name will now go forward alongside the other monthly winners for possible selection as Cork Person of the Year at the annual Gala Awards Lunch in January, 2025.
