One of Mitchelstown’s greatest educators retires

It was a chance horror bicycle crash the day before her Deb’s Ball that sent one of Mitchelstown’s greatest public servants to become one of the town’s leading educators for more than 30 years. 

This week, on Friday, Mary O’Callaghan, the effervescent principal of CBS Primary School, will end her more than 30 years at the forefront of education in the Avondhu region. 

It is the beginning of her journey that could so easily have had a different more tragic outcome and could have meant that hundreds of Mitchelstown pupils might never have had the benefit of this remarkable teacher. 

“I had a very bad accident off a push bike, I was coming down the Vee. I was singing an Abba song and had my legs up on the cross bar, it was the night before my Debs, i was borrowing a shawl for to go to my Debs and I crashed into a car,” the Clogheen native revealed …”
