The Irish Times recently awarded Westport in Co Mayo the title of 'best small town to live in' and one man who has been involved of much of the good work in Westport, imparted some of his knowledge to a group of interested people in Fermoy last week.

Westport town architect Simon Wall, cited tasks such as pedestrianising areas, upgrading footpaths, uniformity of design of buildings and plenty of planting as some of the things that help a town to look well.

The reopening of the old railway line as a 45K open 'greenway' all the way to Achill, has proven a major boost to the area. Such an idea, though not necessarily as 'a greenway', was once mooted by former councillor John Dunlea, who suggested that the then UDC look at the possibility of reopening the short stretch of railway line from the town's northside to Clondulane. Was that such a crazy suggestion after all?
