On foot of recent tragedies on our motorways where people have accessed the motorway in the incorrect direction off the interchange, Kevin O’Keefe TD tabled a Parliamentary Question to Minister for Transport, Mr Shane Ross TD with a view to having a further safety audit carried out.

In reply, Deputy O’Keefe was informed that a review is currently being undertaken by Transport Infrastructure Ireland of incidents involving drivers accessing motorways in the wrong direction, with a view to identifying any additional measures that may be appropriate in order to further reduce the risk of such incidents occurring.

In addition, a road safety inspection programme on the motorway network will commence in the coming months.

Signage and other measures in place at motorway junctions to reduce incidents of wrong way access to motorways will be reviewed as part of this programme.

Deputy O’Keefe said he welcomes the news from the TII that the audit will take place, especially on the Cork County M8 interchanges, and he looks forward to the outcome of the report.
