A major auction at the parochial house in Glanworth, with a clearance sale of property owned by retired parish priest, Fr Patrick O’Hanlon, drew the crowds. Auctioned by Michael Barry of Dick Barry & Son, Fermoy, bidding was reported ‘brisk’ on the 120 lots. Top price of the day went on a Victorian oak-carved sideboard, selling for £1,100. A sample of other items sold included a Victorian breakfront bookcase for £800, a Victorian dining table for £620 and walnut chairs fetching £450.

A young couple’s ‘canoodling’ on Barnane, Fermoy disgusted several visiting anglers, in town to fish the autumn open contest in 1993. Locals were also shocked at the ‘carry on’, which apparently ‘went over the top and bordered on gross indecency’! One angler told The Avondhu “I’m no prude, but it was disgusting carry on in broad daylight”.

The community of Shanballymore were set to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the local national school. Dating to 1843, a special 150 page book, detailing the school’s history as well as other aspects of local life, was set to be launched, following a concelebrated Mass and exhibition of old photos and memorabilia. At £5, the book represented good value. Celebrations would be rounded off with a social in the community centre.

34 organisations were set to benefit, to the tune of £24,375, from amenity grants, announced at the Mallow area monthly meeting. Doneraile GAA received the largest grant allocation for a sporting club, at £2,650. Some others organisations to receive grants, included: Ballyhooly Community Association £470, Mitchelstown Boy Scouts £1,110, Avondhu Tourism Assoc £890, Conna Comm Co £440 and Fermoy Animal Shelter £385. The biggest grant was awarded to Woodview Drive Community Centre, Mallow, totalling £3,240.

Two young Fermoy women made history, as they became the first ever female recruits to the local FCA Battalion. Lillian Flynn from Carrignagroghera and Carol Cashman from Beechfield, Fermoy both underwent a mandatory seven day basic military training course at Lynch Camp in Kilworth. This consisted of marching and arms drills, as well as shooting practice. Training instructor, Cpl Thomas O’Donovan, E Company, explained to The Avondhu that they were receiving the same training as that of their male counterparts. Both ladies were married to soldiers.

In brief – Gretta Kelleher, representing The Rathcormac Inn, was chosen as the 1993 Fermoy Rugby Queen. ‘Glanworth chain letter anxiety’ read the headline – with several locals in the Glanworth area fearing to ignore the requests of a chain letter circulating – however, gardai advised those concerned to “throw them in the bin”! The West Waterford town of Lismore saw the arrival of 2 new school principals – Br Rory Mullally at Lismore CBS Primary, while Edmond O’Donoghue took up the reins at the Presentation Convent School.

Ballyduff captured the U16 Western B football championship, following a hard earned 2 point victory over Affane/Cappoquin, on a scoreline of 1-8 to 2-3. An ‘unstoppable shot’ to the back of the net shortly before half-time from Brendan Hannon, had the Ballyduff team in control at the break, 1-4 to 0-1, having played with the wind. The remaining four points registered in the second half were enough to see them emerge victorious at a fine Lismore venue. Kilworth were crowned junior A hurling kingpins of North Cork, when they defeated a game Dromina side by the narrowest of margins in Mallow. Pat Greehy and ‘Chopper’ Shanahan scored 2 first half goals for Kilworth, who led at the break 2-6 to 1-5. A tight second half ensued, until an injury time score from the hurl of Mikey Gowen secured the title for Kilworth, 2-11 to 2-10.
