Fifty years after the original GTI changed the hot hatch market forever, Volkswagen has unveiled the first fully electric model to wear the famous three-letter badge. The new ID. Polo GTI* marks a significant milestone in the brand’s history, blending the performance heritage of the GTI with the latest advances in electric mobility.
Making its world premiere at the prestigious Nürburgring 24-Hour Race in May, the ID. Polo GTI delivers 166 kW (226 PS) and accelerates from 0-100 km/h in just 6.8 seconds. Despite its sporting credentials, Volkswagen says the new model remains perfectly suited to everyday driving.
Like the original Golf GTI launched in 1976, the new electric GTI sends power to the front wheels. The electric motor produces 290 Nm of torque, delivered almost instantaneously, while an electronically controlled front differential lock comes as standard to maximise traction and handling.
PURE GTI DNA
Volkswagen has ensured the ID. Polo GTI remains true to the GTI formula. Standard equipment includes an adaptive DCC sports suspension, progressive steering and a specially developed GTI driving profile. Activated via a button on the sports steering wheel, the mode sharpens the response of the electric motor, steering and suspension systems while also changing the cockpit graphics and colours to create a more focused driving environment.
The result, according to Volkswagen, is an electric vehicle that delivers the distinctive GTI driving experience while embracing a new generation of technology.
IMPRESSIVE RANGE AND FAST CHARGING
Powering the ID. Polo GTI is Volkswagen’s APP290 electric drive system, fed by a 52 kWh net-capacity nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery.
The battery provides a WLTP driving range of up to 424 kilometres and supports DC rapid charging at speeds of up to 105 kW. Thanks to a particularly stable charging curve, the battery can be replenished from 10 to 80 per cent in approximately 24 minutes at a compatible fast-charging station.
DISTINCTIVE GTI STYLING
Visually, the ID. Polo GTI stays faithful to the GTI tradition while adopting Volkswagen’s latest design language.
The compact sports hatchback sits on standard 19-inch alloy wheels and features the iconic red stripe that has been a GTI hallmark since the first Golf GTI. Stretching almost the full width of the front end, the stripe incorporates a three-dimensional GTI badge.
Above it sits an illuminated Volkswagen logo, LED light strip and standard IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights. Lower down, a honeycomb-pattern air intake reinforces the sporty character, while red vertical accents inspired by motorsport towing eyes provide an additional performance-focused touch.
The side profile is characterised by a strong, clean silhouette and a C-pillar design inspired by the original Golf. At the rear, a unique split roof spoiler and illuminated rear lighting signature distinguish the GTI model. Red illumination links the taillights and Volkswagen badge, while a muscular black rear diffuser completes the look.
SPORTY CABIN WITH RETRO TOUCHES
Inside, the GTI’s traditional red-and-black colour scheme dominates the cabin.

Red contrast stitching features on the GTI sports steering wheel, dashboard, doors and seats. A red centre marker at the 12 o’clock position on the steering wheel echoes racing car design, while the front sports seats feature integrated headrests adorned with illuminated GTI logos.
The seat upholstery reinterprets the legendary tartan pattern that has been synonymous with GTI models for decades. Drivers can also use steering wheel-mounted paddles to adjust regenerative braking levels.
A standout feature is the retro display mode available within the 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit. Activated via the steering wheel, it transforms the instrument graphics into a style reminiscent of the original Golf GTI. The central 12.9-inch infotainment display also adopts period-inspired graphics, including a cassette-style music display as a nod to the 1980s.
MORE SPACE THAN EVER BEFORE
Despite its compact dimensions, the ID. Polo GTI offers significantly improved interior space thanks to its dedicated electric vehicle architecture.
Passengers benefit from 19mm more interior room than in the combustion-engined Polo GTI, while headroom and cabin width have also increased. Luggage capacity rises by more than 25 per cent, from 351 litres to 441 litres.
With the rear seats folded, storage space expands to 1,240 litres, compared with 1,125 litres in the previous-generation model.
Practicality is further enhanced by an optional detachable tow hitch. With a towing capacity of up to 1.2 tonnes on a 12 per cent gradient and a drawbar load of 75kg, the vehicle can accommodate bicycle carriers, trailers and even motorcycles.

PREMIUM FEATURES AVAILABLE
Customers seeking additional luxury can choose from a range of optional extras.
These include a Harman Kardon premium audio system delivering 425 watts through 10 speakers, including a centre speaker and subwoofer. A panoramic glass roof is also available, along with electrically adjustable 12-way front seats featuring a pneumatic massage function — a feature rarely seen in this segment.
For those seeking maximum performance, Volkswagen will offer specially developed 235/40 R19 Bridgestone Potenza Sport tyres.
ADVANCED DRIVER ASSISTANCE TECHNOLOGY
Built on Volkswagen’s latest MEB+ platform and software architecture, the ID. Polo GTI comes equipped with a comprehensive range of driver assistance systems.
Among the optional technologies is the latest generation of Connected Travel Assist, which combines online data with assisted steering, acceleration and braking functions. The system can now recognise red traffic lights and automatically bring the vehicle to a stop within operational limits.
Another notable innovation is one-pedal driving, allowing drivers to accelerate and decelerate primarily through modulation of the accelerator pedal alone.
As Volkswagen celebrates five decades of GTI heritage, the ID. Polo GTI demonstrates how one of motoring’s most iconic performance badges is evolving for the electric age. Combining strong performance, increased practicality, advanced technology and unmistakable GTI styling, it aims to prove that electrification need not come at the expense of driving enjoyment.
