An investigation has been launched into an oil leak that forced businesses in Mitchelstown to shut down for a time last weekend.

Noxious fumes that overwhelmed staff and members of the public in Mitchelstown was caused by a leak traced to the grounds of the Catholic Church.

A Cork County Council operation was set up to investigate the leak through manholes in the town sewer system until they eventually discovered the problem in the church grounds.

Business leaders and the public have called on the Council to explain how the public system was compromised and have demanded measures are put in place in the system to safeguard the public.
