Fermoy based Labour councillor Noel McCarthy is tipped to become the leader of the party grouping on Cork County Council, following the recent resignation of Cllr John Mulvihill.

Cllr McCarthy is currently deputy leader of the Labour party on the county council. The matter is likely to be decided at the members' monthly meeting on Monday next.

The party was dealt a second blow this week with the news that long serving member Paula Desmond won't be contesting the next local elections. She has been a member of Cork County Council for 25 years.
