Mitchelstown Community Allotments lost out on funding under Cork County Council's Community Fund 2013 because the ground they're using hasn't been tranferred into their ownership, the Fermoy Electoral Area meeting heard on Tuesday.

A condition of funding under the scheme is that they are in possession of the site, Director of Services, Tom Stritch, explained to members. He was responding to a request from Cllr Frank O'Flynn to reconsider their application for funding as, he said, 'they badly needed it'. Cllr Noel McCarthy supported him in seeking to have their application reconsidered. The council official explained that the community fund is for bigger infrastructural projects.

"What'll happen if we dilute this money is that the bigger projects will get nothing, they won't be able to drive on their projects," he pointed out.

It was agreed to consider the allotment group's application for funding under the amenity grants scheme instead.

The First Responders group in Fermoy also had their application for funding from the Community Fund denied. In that case it was felt that the HSE was the more appropriate body that the group should apply to for funding. Cllr Noel McCarthy didn't agree however and he made the case for them, saying they were a community group working voluntarily and providing an important service.

"I feel they need our support," he urged. Chairman Kevin O'Keefe warned however that they'd have to be careful of grant aiding applicants who don't meet the criteria. He felt the group should be funded by the HSE given the nature of their work. After further discussion it was agreed to consider them for funding under the amenity grants instead.
