A talk was held recently in Castletownroche to raise awareness about the Mary's Meals project, which feeds children in impoverished countries, and a nine day novena walk which will take place across the country in August, starting out in Cork.

Mary's Meals is a project which was started in Scotland in 1992 to give meals to children in an education centre and now they feed 740,000 children each day.

Mary Higgins from East Cork explained that it costs just €12.40 to feed a child in an impoverished country fora whole year. She added that the group in Castletownroche at the meeting was one of the most enthusiastic groups she has met yet.

"I haven't felt that buzz in a crowd in a long long time. Their enthusiasm was just so powerful."

A walk across Ireland will take place in August, with groups from Cork setting off from Roche's Point on August 7, while another group will leave Cork city and finish up in Mallow. In each parish that they stop in, there will be a Mass, before they finish up in Knock Shrine on August 15.

Mary said that while she is committed to walking for the full nine days, people can opt in for a full or half day of walking. They are also looking for people to help out with sponsoring cars or a minibus to bring people to different locations. They are also looking for nurses or those who are qualified in first aid to be on hand.

"Anyone who cannot join us might also include us in their prayers," she said.

If anyone is interested in taking part in the walk or in donating towards the Mary's Meals project, they can contact Mary Higgins on 086-2462003 or the Mary's Meals office in Leitrim on 071-9620175 or email info@marysmeals.ie.
