Fermoy community worker, Jacinta McCormack has been actively promoting and raising awareness around health initiatives in the local community, as part of the Fermoy Community Health Project.

Their mission is to support the development of health projects in the area through short term initiatives ‘to inspire people to improve their own health and well-being’, according to Ms McCormack.

A recent course, entitled Storybags, run in conjunction with the local Education Training Board and aimed at parents and careers of children aged 3 to 7, encouraged them to work with their child’s favourite story book to develop easy and enjoyable ways of bringing the story to life. This was achieved by making scenery and props of the characters in the books and using role play to enhance the visual aspect of the story.

The Mighty-Men six week personal development programme was co-ordinated by the Fermoy Community Health Project and funded by Avondhu Blackwater Partnership. The programme was aimed exclusively at men, and aimed to give its participants a taste of what it is like to actively work on their own personal development. The men learned how to effectively set goals as well as how to recognise and develop their potential.

“Running the programme in an all-male group setting in the Resource Centre proved a popular and effective format for it," said Jacinta.

The Walkie-Talkie Group started on their Let’s Get Moving programme in July 2014. The group is for people who are doing little or no walking, and are interested in getting moving.

During National Carers Week, the Fermoy Community Health Project attended a social coffee morning run by the Fermoy Hokey Cokey Club.

Both the Hokey Cokey Club and the Walkie-Talkie Group will be starting up again in September. If you would like to get involved in any of these initiatives, you can contact Jacinta McCormack on 085-8742320.
