Staff from Teagasc Moorepark took time out from busy schedules to take part in last week’s charity soccer event in aid of a suicide prevention service, ‘Teac Tom’.

Locals were joined by teams from around the country, with Tirlán (formerly Glanbia), Macra and The Farmer’s Journal all sending representatives.

The fundraiser was hosted by Fermoy Soccer Club, whose AstroTurf proved invaluable. Through the pages of The Avondhu, organisers wish to thank the club for use of their splendid facilities.

Teams comprised male and female participants and in keeping with the occasion, things didn’t get too competitive. Referees were drawn from a ‘local pool’ and not too many cards were produced.

TEAC TOM

Readers of The Avondhu may not be that familiar with the work of ‘Teac Tom’, which predominantly serves the Kilkenny/Laois catchment. Set up by Angela Hayes in February 2014, it provides counselling and support to those affected by suicide, as well as operating a 24/7 helpline.

Prior to the competition, Angela addressed participants. She spoke about the work of ‘Teac Tom’ and thanked everyone involved in what she described as ‘a very important fundraiser’. Unfortunately, Angela has lost her husband, Tommy and son, Thomas to suicide.
