The issue of Mitchelstown Convent falling further and further into a state of dereliction with every passing day was a hot topic at a recent council meeting in Mallow, when councillors were told that "this is now in the legal realm".

These were the words of Divisional Manager, Moira Murrell, at this week's meeting of the Northern Committee in Mallow.

Cllr Frank O'Flynn put forward a motion to get an up to date report on the Convent, particularly in relation to making the site safe.

He was told by the manager that she would not comment any further, but to say that the matter is "proceeding significantly and there is significant movement on it".

She added that they expect to have some outcome over the course of this month. "It is moving in the right direction," she told councillors at Monday morning's meeting.

Cllr O'Keeffe pressed the issue by asking whether or not the council have actually managed to speak to the owner of the site.

The manager said that they had tried to make contact with the owner and when this failed, this is what led them down the legal route.

The news that the matter was proceeding well was welcomed by Cllr Noel McCarthy.

Cllr O'Flynn finished by saying that the Convent holds great importance to the people of Mitchelstown in terms of heritage and he said that this is going on for far too long and that the people of the town want answers.
