All past pupils and staff along with the local community are invited to Shanballymore N.S. next Thursday, June 19th to join with the school in celebrating the official opening and blessing of their new school extension. Junior Minister for Education, Sean Sherlock will be present on the day.
The extension was the result of an application submitted in March 2012 for additional accommodation to meet the growing needs of the school. The classroom is currently used by third and fourth classes, along with their teacher Miss Smith and SNA Eilish Burgees - it has been a fantastic addition to the school. As a result, the school hall is once again used as a hall as it had been used as a classroom while the new room was being constructed.
On Thursday, a number of very special achievements for the school will also be celebrated. We will be raising our first Green Flag, which the school received recently at a ceremony in Cork. Mrs Hannon along with the Green Schools Committee are to be thanked for all their hard work in securing this award. Last year the Active Schools Committee, under the guidance of Mrs Shinnick, achieved the Active Flag for the school. This was achieved by re-evaluating the PE programme in the school, as well as encouraging children to follow a healthy diet and exercise regime.
DOING BUSINESS
On the day also, the school’s Junior Entrepreneur project will be showcased. The children of fifth and sixth classes recently purchased a number of hens from a local farmer. A chicken coup and run was donated by a local family to house the hens on the school site and the children are now selling the eggs every day in the school reception office at 2.50 for half a dozen. Orders can be placed on 022 25611. More to follow on our business project next week!
The school would be delighted to see as many past pupils and staff as possible return to the school on Thursday morning, for what promises to be a great opportunity to meet up once again and reminisce about times past in the village. See you there!
