Imagine looking down the main street in Mitchelstown, or Fermoy, or Kilfinane, or Lismore, and picture leagues of foreign soldiers making their way down the street on an average day. This is what 44 million people in Ukraine have lived through this week.
A frequent phrase heard has been ‘you can’t believe it’. That the scenes are ‘unimaginable’, ‘horrific’ and ‘unbelievable’. For Konstantin and Mila, living in Mitchelstown with 19 years, it is indeed unimaginable and horrific, as along with both families and friends, they both have their mothers currently living, and sheltering, in the capital Kyiv.
Speaking on Tuesday with The Avondhu, Mila is composed, but clearly and understandably anxious. Her husband, Konstantin, is on videocall, working in Dublin this week.
“Our mothers are both alive, but spend most days in the basement. They are both in Kyiv, and if they hear the sirens they shelter.”
