Fermoy Mayor, Olive Corcoran, played host during a visit by the local active retirement group to the town hall and council chambers last week.

"Most of the group had never been there before and the town clerk, Pauline Moriarty, was happy to welcome a group of 50 last Thursday morning," the Mayor explained.

A lively discussion ensued in the council chambers, with many topics, including changes in banking, the group's concerns regarding the possibility of changes to the bus service, local issues such as derelict buildings in the town, dog control and how important it is to have safe footpaths when one is getting older.

The Mayor said she'd love to see members of the group attending the council meetings as observers from time to time.

Cllr John Murphy was on hand and he gave a potted history of the town council. Cllr Noel McCarthy was also in attendance and he answered many of the visitors questions as did the town clerk.

Members of the group thanked the town clerk, Mayor and councillors and said they were delighted to meet them and council staff and see the municipal building. Refreshments were served before they left.

The Mayor, herself a member of the Active Retirement Group said it had been one of the most enjoyable days she'd had since joining Fermoy Town Council. "I am very proud to be a member of this group under the very efficient leadership of John O'Mahony," she remarked.
