Cork ladies footballers secured their 10th All-Ireland football title in 11 years with a hard fought victory over Dublin on Sunday, September 27.

Cork ladies footballers secured their 10th All-Ireland football title in 11 years with a hard fought victory over Dublin on Sunday.

The day couldn’t have been better for football, as a sunlit Croke Park attracted the biggest attendance for a female sporting event in Europe.

It won’t have gone down as Cork’s most spellbinding performance but the doggedness and determination shown really emphasised why some of these girls (Bríd Stack, Valerie Mulcahy, Deirdre O’Reilly, Briege Corkery, Geraldine O’Flynn and Rena Buckley) now have 10 All-Ireland medals to their name.

Their ability to respond to Dublin’s scores, with scores of their own was also a common facet of the game and really helped to stem any momentum their opponents may have been building.

It was one of the legendary group previously named, who opened the scoring early on, with Mulcahy nailing a close-in free. The Dubs had the next two scores ...
