Mitchelstown boxer Vladimir Belujsky has started the boxing season, as he means to go on – with victory, as he won the Celtic Box Cup in Dungarvan at the weekend.

The young boxer persevered following his last bout in the ring last season, when he lost a fight on a controversial split decision against an eight times English champ and instead of sitting on his laurels, he dove straight into training.

He has been training a lot locally, but also benefited from the expertise and knowledge of esteemed boxers, such as Michael O’Reilly, 2015 European Games gold medallist, who was preparing for the World Championships in Qatar, and Cubans undefeated Luis Garcia and heavyweight Mike Perez.

At the weekend, Vladimir had two fights, one against Jack Fisher from England, where he won the semi-final, but came away with a  torn ligament in his left elbow.

In the final, he was up against Michael O’Reilly from Tramore and despite being head butted in the first round, which caused a bad cut over his left eye, he went on to taste victory.

“My coach did a great job on stopping the bleeding between the rounds and I was able to fight on and get the win.

“I worked very hard for this tournament and thankfully it has paid off,” he said.
