One of the country's longest serving gardai is set to retire. Larry O'Hara, who started out as a raw recruit in April 1973 would go on to give 4 decades of outstanding service to the people of Waterford and Cork. He gave stints in Mitchelstown, Cobh and Youghal but spent the bulk of his time (30 years) in Ballyduff Upper. he is currently stationed in Kilworth where he works closely with his good friend and colleague, Garda Denis Motherway.
An old style garda who always sided with 'the ordinary man', Larry was particulary keen to clamp down on individuals who preyed on the elderly or those living alone. Having the trust of locals was his biggest asset and when it came to investigative work, there was never any shortage of reliable information from people who trusted this friendly garda and occasional musician.
Forthcoming function
Comrades, family and friends are expected to come out in force on Friday, 1st November for a retirement function in The Firgrove Hotel, Mitchelstown. It has the makings of a great night with Mick Hayes supplying the music. Tickets for the event (€20) are available from the Garda station in Fermoy - early booking advisable.
