On Friday last, 5th September, 200 blood and platelet donors from all walks of life were honoured at the IBTS Awards Ceremony in the Rochestown Park Hotel, Cork, with many in the local area being acknowledged for their contributions.

Recipients were recognised for the remarkable milestone of donating either 50 or 100 units of blood – a commitment that can take decades to achieve. From the Fermoy/Mitchelstown area alone, 3 donors received  awards to mark their 100th donation, with 6 individuals receiving awards for their 50th donation.

Amongst those locals to hit the milestone 100 donation, recipient of a ceramic pelican, was well-known sportsman, Brian Twomey. A 7th Dan in karate, the chief instructor for all of Europe, told The Avondhu this week of his ‘satisfaction’ at donating blood through the years, having commenced his journey in the early 1970s.
