Intrigue and magic in alternative Ireland - weaving a tale of karma in counter-culture. That is the subject of ‘The Man in the Mirror’ – a debut novel from the pen of L E Hartley which, The Avondhu can disclose, is the pseudonym used by white witch, Del Richardson of Castlepook, Doneraile (taken from her maiden name Lynda Hartley).

An erotic fantasy that explores how Karma impacts on the lives of its subjects, beginning with a chance encounter in 60s Ireland, it explores how their actions and ambitions influence their futures over four decades.

The tale unfolds in a non-linear fashion from 1967 to the present, as the eponymous Man in the Mirror is confronted with changes beyond his wildest imaginings when he meets a mysterious woman on a train to London.

Add to the mix an array of counter-culture characters and a pair of Ukrainian mercenaries acting in the interests of their Russian oligarch boss, and you have a captivating page-turner about life amidst alternative society in Britain and Ireland across a generation.

Hartley says that ‘The Man in the Mirror’ can be read as escapist fiction, but may also afford the reader advice along the way on how we can each pursue and achieve our goals in life. Having lived an alternative lifestyle since the late 1960s, Hartley draws on many personal experiences for her well crafted debut.

She was instrumental in the founding of the Free Festival movement in the 70’s and 80’s. Her descriptions of tipi-dwelling and travelling with horses are all based on real-life experiences.
