A number of local primary schools have been recognised recently at the Hibernian Hotel in Mallow for their participation in the ‘Food Dudes’ healthy eating programme, including Shanballymore National School, Scoil Mhuire in Ballyhooly, St Catherine’s in Ballynoe, Kilmagner NS, as well as CBS Primary in Mitchelstown.

Speaking with The Avondhu this week, Siobhán Shinnick of Shanballymore NS spoke enthusiastically about the programme, of which the initial four-year cycle has just ended. Hoping to begin it again in September, Ms Shinnick said the pupils in the school had benefited where two types of fresh fruit and vegetables were dropped into them each day for two or three weeks, and the benefits of healthy eating shown to the children.

The school already has a healthy eating policy, whereby treats are only allowed every Friday and so the Food Dudes programme is a complementary project to the school’s own ethos.
