A number of Coillte forests locally are due to benefit from a large government grant which has been allocated for general maintenance, contingency for windblow and for the improvement of facilities.

Glengarra Woods near Burncourt is due to receive the largest grant in The Avondhu locality, to the tune of €12,000, for the construction of a new footbridge for walking trail users.

Corrin Wood, Kilbarry, Knockananig and Glensheskin Wood in the Fermoy and Kilworth areas, will be funded for general maintenance works, as will Glenanair (Ballyhoura), Moanbaun near Watergrasshill, Cahir Park Woods, Glengarra Woods near Burncourt, Kilballyboy (Clogheen) and Glenshelane, outside Cappoquin.

In Leamlara Woods there are plans for footbridge improvement works, while in Ballyhoura forest, there is money available for general maintenance and to replace and supplement signage.

At Galty Castle Woods near Skeheenarinky there is funding for general maintenance as well as tree surgery and a contingency for windblow, while St. Declan’s Way has been awarded finance to carry out general maintenance and also route improvements.

The investment is part of a strategic partnership between the Department of Rural and Community Development and Coillte to maintain and manage existing trails in Coillte forests, along with developing new recreation opportunities.
