Roads in Knockraha will be closed from the end of May to facilitate work for the Celtic Interconnector Project, an under-sea link that will allow the exchange of electricity between Ireland and France.

From Monday, 29th May until 3rd June, the L-6989 Knockraha East Road will be closed at all times, with diversions around Pigeon Hill and Glenmore Stores. Local access will be allowed. The closure is to allow for the Installation of ducting, as part of the project.

The Celtic Interconnector will connect into substations at Knockraha, Cork and La Martyre in France. The project will include cable laying on land, from Knockraha to Youghal in County Cork, and across 500 kilometres of ocean to Keradenec, Brittany, France, before travelling another 30 kilometres to the French network connection in La Martyre. It is expected to be operational by 2026

When delivered, the project, which is being codeveloped by EirGrid and its French counterpart, Réseau de Transport d’Electricité (RTE), will allow 700 MW (megawatts) of electricity to move between Ireland and France, equal to supplying power to approximately 450,000 homes.
