Positive tone as 2015 is rung in
This month Fermoy Community Youth Centre rolled out a classic for their annual pantomime, with 'Jack and the Beanstalk' performed to sell-out shows over two weekends. While adhering to the plot of the 19th century fairytale, it took on and incorporated its own modern style and humour under the direction of Killian Collins.
As highlighted by Youth Centre manager Kieran Barry after the 12th and final run of the show in the Palace Theatre on Sunday night, the level of dedication and effort put into the show by the entire cast and team was visible to see in the finished product.
Reactive to its young audience, 'Jack and the Beanstalk' featured a mix of new music along with some classic musical numbers. As with the recent Fermoy Musical Society production of 'The Music Man', Killian Collins directed, Stephen Cullinane O’Regan handled choreography while Aoife Collins acted as musical director. The backstage team set the scene with a colourful stage and excellent costumes and props.
Full of laughs and the obligatory puns and double entendres, this performance of 'Jack and the Beanstalk' featured plenty local acting talent. Returning to the Palace Theatre following his performance in 'The Music Man' in December, Donal Finn stared as Jack (a shared role with Brendan Daly), while his brother ‘Silly’ Billy was portrayed by Ballyduff’s Sean Kenny.
Patrick D’Alton received plenty of well meaning boos for his role as the antagonist, Fleshcreep. His superior, the Giant Blunderbore, was played by Tom Beresford, while Mikie Dunne and Colette Daly portrayed the roles of Barron Tightfist and Dame Trott respectively.
