Heritage Houses of County Cork.

Mitchelstown Heritage Society is delighted to announce it is hosting UCC Lecturer Dr Maria Elena Turk, primary author of Cork County Council's latest publication, Heritage Houses of County Cork, on Thursday, April 23rd @ 8.15pm in Mitchelstown Town Hall.

This event, which is titled 'Through the keyhole; a look at the Heritage Houses of County Cork' is open to the public and there is no admission charge.

Dr Turk is the primary author of this companion piece to last year's publication Heritage Bridges of County Cork. Written in conjunction with Tobar Archaeological Services & the Heritage Department of Cork County Council, this illustrated, full colour publication looks on the development of houses over time, using examples from throughout Cork, from simple farmers' cottages and Bronze Age settlements, through Tower Houses, Ascendancy Houses and much more.

Mitchelstown's beautiful Georgian square King Square, features in the book. As well as discussing the design and evolution of these buildings, the book charts the dwellings history and interesting stories attached to them.

Elena's Phd thesis topic was on workers' cottages, domestic architecture is her passion. She lectures for the adult continuing education department in UCC on cultural heritage tourism and archaeology.

This broad lecture will give a fascinating insight into the houses which make up the patchwork of Cork's history. Refreshments will be served afterwards, all are welcome to this free event. Heritage Houses of County Cork is available in book shops now.
