In the early 1800s, a wedding celebration took place in south Tipperary. Such was the crowd, the food, the singing, the dancing and the merrymaking, that it passed in to local folklore as ‘The Wedding of Ballyporeen’.
Memory of the event was reinforced further, by a ballad recalling the famous occasion. According to the ballad’s author (unknown), food served at the wedding included: bacon, turkey, culcannon, pies, dumplings, cod, cow heel and tripe – the priest dined on a serving of snipe.
While it would be difficult to replicate that sort of menu, those who attended a re-enactment of ‘The Wedding of Ballyporeen’ in Ballyporeen Community Centre last Saturday night were still treated to a truly excellent meal.
