Hero’s welcome for Killavullen’s ‘drifting’ champion

There was a massive homecoming celebration in Killavullen last Friday evening for 20-year-old Conor Shanahan, following his victory in the 2023 Drift Masters European Championship.

Part of a well established motor sport family, Conor has made great strides in recent years and according to 'drifting' commentators, has been the form driver all year. If Warsaw in Poland was the 'drifting' capital two weeks ago, the epicentre of the sport in Ireland is the parish of Killavullen, home to the Shanahans and another high achiever, James Deane from Castletownroche. Speaking before family, friends and supporters last Friday night, Conor paid tribute to his close friend.

"This is a really special moment for myself and my family, who have been so supportive over the years. Of course, James (Deane) has been a massive inspiration, he has led the way and I'm delighted to be able to follow in his footsteps. It's incredible to be able to look out here this evening and see so many familar faces, I hope everyone really enjoys themselves," he said.
