The 6th class children at Scoil Mháirtín, Kilworth who donated 82 bags of food, toiletries and more the 'Handbags for the Homeless' charity in Fermoy.

As a Christmas charity initiative this year, the children in Rang a Sé in Scoil Mháirtín, Kilworth decided to collect for the local charity: ‘Handbags for the Homeless’.

Every Tuesday night, volunteers bring donations such as old bags, food items, clothing items and toiletries to Cork City.

Everything is separated and packed into bags which are then delivered to those who are homeless around the city.

The class decided on this local charity as they wanted to do their best to help the homeless in Cork who often have to spend Christmas in the cold.

The pupils asked the rest of the school to help with the donations but the majority of them came from those in 6th Class.

After gathering up all of the donations, the goods were distributed evenly into the old bags, to ensure that every bag had a variety of food, clothing and toiletry items.

The children collected a total of 82 full bags for the homeless.

All of the bags were then collected from the by local volunteers and will be donated to those living on the streets of Cork city over the next number of weeks.

The school is very grateful to all those who donated items over the past three weeks and the look forward to doing something similar again in the near future.
