
Uachtarán na hÉireann, President Michael D. Higgins officiated at the National Famine Commemoration in Kilmallock, Co. Limerick on Saturday, 17th May, alongside Minister for Arts, Media, Communications, Culture and Sport, Patrick O’Donovan TD.
With military honours and a wreath-laying ceremony in remembrance of all those who died during the Famine, the formal State ceremony featured a keynote address by An tUachtarán. Mayor of Limerick, John Moran and Minister O’Donovan also addressed the gathering.
The Famine Memorial Park in the grounds of Kilmallock Workhouse, where the commemoration event was held, is the burial ground of several thousand victims of the Famine.
