Glanmire’s Mia Furlong scored a total of 13 points over two qualifying games in the 2019 FIBA 3×3 U18 Europe Cup qualifiers in Rieti, Italy last weekend.
The young Glanmire Community College student was selected for the U18 Women’s Team and scored was the highest scoring Irish plater over the two days.
Having been drawn in Pool A, the girls’ first game was against Poland. Ireland entered foul trouble early as both teams played physically from the get-go.
It took Ireland a few passages of play to get into a rhythm but Ciara Mulleady and Mia Furlong got Ireland on the board. Furlong contributed a pair of two pointers, while also heading to the free throw line multiple times.
In the end, Ireland’s foul trouble allowed Poland to capitalise on free throws and come away victorious with a score of 21 to 13. Mia Furlong scored an impressive 8 points in the opening game.
The second match was against the home team, Italy and this time Mia scored 5 points.
According to the match report ‘Furlong performed well, making crucial scores in an attempt to regain the lead.’
Unfortunately the team were once again defeated with a score of 19 to Ireland’s 10 points.
