The brakes have been put on any plans that Cork County Council had to seek a contractor for resurfacing works on the main street in Fermoy, for which €450,000 was allocated by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) in February. Local councillors were informed of the news late last week, however, the TII had written to the council to inform them of the news almost three months ago in early May.
TII wrote to local authorities across the country in a letter dated May 8th to advise them that a review was taking place of the service’s planned expenditure for the year against their budget; in light of this review, the TII instructed local authorities not to advertise for any contractors for works for certain projects, phase 1 of the works on the N72 in Fermoy being one of those.
The news was not disclosed to local councillors at a Northern Committee meeting later that month, on May 20th. At that meeting, the council simply said that they were preparing a design for the works. Furthermore, in early June the Director of Services Niall Healy was pictured with Sean Callery of the Cork National Roads Office and the Mayor of County Cork (at the time, Cllr Frank O’Flynn), examining the design and plans for the works in Fermoy. Again, no mention was made in this media release from Cork County Council that the works may not even go to tender.
