A councillor has called on the local authority to put a plan in place to ensure historic cemeteries are maintained, saying there are several such cemeteries in dire need of maintenance and restoration, where crumbling stone work and other issues need to be addressed immediately.
Cllr Deirdre O’Brien said the dangerous and neglected sites are at Coole Abbey Graveyard near Castlelyons, at Clenor Graveyard in Doneraile and said there are also problems at cemeteries in Ballynoe and Kilworth.
“There is a large number of sites that need work. It’s important that we remember people who have gone before us and honour them with the upkeep of these graveyards…”
