A very special presentation took place at St Patrick's Community Hospital in Fermoy on Monday afternoon.

Staunch Fine Gael activist and member of the Collins 22 Society, Noel Scannell, travelled from Kilworth to Fermoy to present former TD and Minister Dick Barry with a copy of the book 'Michael Collin's Own Story'.

Noel told him it was Collins' story as told to Hayden Talbot and was one of the most important books written about him. It was published two years after the signing of the Treaty in December 1921 and has since been reprinted. Noel is friends with the publisher Eamon de Burca.

"It gives me great pleasure to present this book, signed by Enda Kenny, to you Dick, one of the great parliamentarians of Cork East. People often still speak of you," Noel told Dick as he presented him with the book.

Dick responded as Gaelige, thanking Noel before reverting to English to explain that, like Noel, he was a liftime admirer of Michael Collins and his work in fighting for Irish freedom.

"I thought I had read all the Michael Collins books which is why I'm so delighted to get this one," he told him.

He went on to thank Noel for all he did for Fine Gael in elections and for him personally, working on his behalf since 1954.

Also on hand for the presentation were Dick's wife Margaret and other Fine Gael supporters Mary Kenneally, Phil Leahy, Pat O'Brien and John Kearney.
