Former senator and Ireland South MEP, Brian Crowley, dies

Former Senator and MEP, Brian Crowley has died aged 61, following a year long illness. He had been receiving treatment at Cork University Hospital where he died early this morning (January 23rd).

Brian Crowley was a long-serving member of Fianna Fáil, representing the party in the Seanad and as a MEP for the Munster and Ireland South constituencies.

He began his political career with the party, following his nomination to the Seanad by then Taoiseach, Albert Reynolds in 1993.

He successfully contested the 1994 European Elections and was re-elected three times, topping the poll in each election. He retired from public life in 2019.

Paying tribute to Mr. Crowley, Taoiseach, Micheal Martin, said that Brian was “a hugely impressive individual”.

“He sought election to the European Parliament for the Munster Constituency and was not only elected, but topping the poll in a stunning victory.”

“That relationship with this voters only became stronger over his years of dedicated and energetic service and he went on to top the poll in each of the three subsequent elections he contested, attracting truly extraordinary levels of support.”

Following an accident when he was 16, Mr. Crowley was a wheelchair user and suffered from various health complications. He was born in Blackrock, Dublin and grew up in Bandon, county Cork.

Brian Crowley is the son of former TD, Flor Crowley, who served multiple constituencies across Cork. He is survived by his mother, Sally and his extended family.
