Five local primary schools were this week awarded Green Flag status for the first time in recognition of their hard work on the Green-Schools Litter & Waste theme.

Ballindangan, Conna, Killavullen, Burncourt and Ballylooby national schools received the honour at a ceremony in the Radisson Blu Hotel in Cork on Monday.

Meanwhile, a number of other local schools successfully renewed their Green Flag under the themes of Energy, Water, Travel, Biodiversity and Global Citizenship.

They include the schools of Curraghagalla, Castletownroche, Kilmagner, Gaelscoil de hÍde, Scoil Mhairtin, Kilworth; Scoil Bhríde, Rathcormac; Ballyhooly, Galbally, Kilbehenny, Clondulane, Shanballymore, Ballyduff, Presentation Secondary School, Mitchelstown and CBS Secondary School, Mitchelstown.
