Fermoy 3 Clonakilty 0

The U16s welcomed Clonakilty on Sunday in the National Cup on the back of a good result the previous week away to Tramore Athletic.

Fermoy attacked Clonakilty from the off forcing a number of corners in quick succession, one of the corners swung in by Jordan Murphy to the back post controlled and finished well by Rob Broderick to put Fermoy 1-0 ahead.

Fermoy didn’t rest on their lead and the impressive back line dealt with what came their way and this led to Fermoy’s 2nd goal. Shane Howard with a clever pass to DJ Cahill who burst down the right wing playing a lovely cross to Jordan Murphy at the edge of the box. Jordan controlled the ball well before flashing a half volley in to the corner of the net, finishing a well worked team goal.

The 2nd goal woke up the Clonakilty side but Fermoy’s defence stood firm until half-time, holding on to a deserved 2-0 lead.

Clonakilty came out more determined in the 2nd half and pushed Fermoy back for a sustained period, but Fermoy dealt with the attacks well.

Fermoy to their credit dug deep and battled well in the middle, one particular attack leading to a clever looping volley from Jake Mehigan from distance hitting the bar.

With 20 minutes left a clever angled ball from Matthew Walsh on the left wing found Rob Broderick on the right flank, who crossed to the far post brilliantly for Conor De Roiste to nod in the 3rd and put Fermoy into the next round of the cup and finish a very good performance from every one of the lads.

Team: Jack Gallagher, Jordan Farrell, Shane Howard, Cillian Lynch, Chris McGrath (c), Rob Broderick, DJ Cahill, Darragh Scott, Jack Tonks, Jordan Murphy and Conor De Roiste. Subs: Matthew Walsh, Jake Mehigan, Christy Veste and Adam Clarke.

WEEKEND ROUND-UP

It was a bad weekend all round with most teams making cup exits - the U12, U13 and U15 sides all narrowly lost out in their weekend Cup fixtures, while the juniors and youth teams lost in their Munster cup fixtures. Meanwhile the senior side lost their first league game of the season when they lost 0-1 to Mallow United.

One piece of good news was the U16 side’s fine home win in the National Cup where they overcame Clonakilty by 3-0 to progress to round 2. Scorers for Fermoy were Rob Broderick, Jordan Murphy and Conor De Roiste.

GREAT GOALS

Lots of media chat this past week around great goals. Of course the debate will never be resolved as to the greatest goal ever scored – here are a few contenders:

Maradona v England – 1986 World Cup – Packed stadium and millions viewing worldwide. Jack Wilshire – Arsenal v Norwich City - Packed Emirates Stadium. Stephanie Roche goal – National League - Peamount United v Wexford Youths.

You can Google/YouTube all of the above – they were amazing.
