Members of Fermoy Town Council adopted a 'Nothing ventured nothing gained' approach to the issue of free parking in the town's car parks at their recent monthly meeting.

Councillor Noel McCarthy had a motion before the meeting that they write to the Office of Public Works (OPW) seeking an extension up until Christmas of the scheme which has allowed free parking in the town's car parks for the past three months. The scheme is due to finish at the end of this month. The town council traditionally waives parking charges in the off-street car parks from around mid-December.

The motion was seconded by Cllr. Tadhg O'Donovan who asked members to support it, saying it would send out a strong message if it was to be unanimous.

The loss of revenue which would have to be made up for over the Christmas period by the OPW is €10,000, town clerk Pauline Moriarty told the meeting. The cost to the OPW of the three months of free parking since August is €35,000, she revealed.

It was agreed to make the request to the OPW with an amendment - that they go the whole hog and ask them to extend the gesture until the end of the flood relief works next April.
