Fermoy Macra men’s team took home 2nd place at Macra’s National Dairy Council (NDC) indoor soccer All-Ireland final, losing out to Dungarvan Macra from County Waterford. Held on Sunday, 1st March in Gormanstown College, Co Meath, a total of 29 teams battled it out for the coveted All-Ireland titles on offer.

PATH TO THE FINAL

The 5-a-side event saw their opening match against Kilmeen Macra from the Carbery region, which Fermoy won 5-1. Following a 1-1 draw with Tipperary side, Nenagh Macra, the Fermoy side secured their second victory, on a 3-0 scoreline, against Camross Macra from County Laois.

The final group game saw a hard fought 1-0 victory against South Longford Macra, ensure the side progressed to the semi-finals. Here, the Fermoy side easily accounted for Ballymurphy Macra (Carlow) on a 5-1 scoreline, thus securing a final place v Dungarvan Macra.

However, on the day they fell just short of taking the title, when the Waterford club secured a 4-1 victory, leaving Fermoy as national runners-up – a fine achievement

The Fermoy team consisted of Ronan Abernethy, Aidan O’Brien, James McCarthy, Mike Dunne, Tom Ahern, Stephen Mills, Pa Fitzgerald, Sean Fogarty and Harry Cashman.

HEALTH & WELLBEING

Macra National President, Kieran O’Dowd, presented the awards to the teams, and congratulated them on their achievement, saying “Sports competitions like indoor soccer are hugely popular in Macra – providing a fun way to meet new people and get fit along with the chance to win a place on the Macra prizewinners trip in autumn. Keeping fit and healthy is the ethos of Macra’s health and wellbeing programme with the NDC”.

Kilkenny City Macra’s women’s team beat Coolaney Macra, from Sligo, with that team taking second place in the same competition for the second year in a row.

Mr O’Dowd thanked the National Dairy Council for their support of Macra’s sporting competitions. Up to date health and wellbeing information is available on the macra.ie website, along with recipes and details of upcoming events.
