It has been confirmed by Minister Joan Burton, that the Family Income Supplement will increase by 25% this year to an overall fund of €280 million.
The announcement has been welcomed by Minister of State for Research and Innovation, Sean Sherlock, who said that the Family Income Supplement (FIS) is a crucial payment for working families.
He said that this kind of supplement helps families to look forward to better futures and he's glad the Government recognised the importance of the FIS.
“The evidence is there that shows people are better off in work, and the FIS payment helps recipients gain a stronger foothold in employment and create better futures for their families. My office locally is seeing regular requests from around the constituency and this proves that this payment is a crucial stepping stone to financial independence through secure employment.”
FIS is a weekly tax free top-up payment for employees on low pay with children. Currently, more than 44,000 working families and 98,000 children benefit from the scheme.
To be eligible, claimants must be employed for at least 19 hours a week, have one or more dependent children living or being supported by them and an average weekly income below the specified amount for the family size.
“In-work benefits are a tried and tested policy by governments around the world to alleviate child poverty among low-wage households and to increase the financial incentives to work for larger families. Given that the budget has grown every year since 2012, that shows the importance of this payment to economy and society.”
Minister Sherlock urged anyone who may qualify for the payment to make contact with their local social welfare office or to contact his office on 022-53523.
