The theft of marble stones from a grave in Brigown Cemetery, Mitchelstown has shocked and upset a local family.

The decorative stones, which cost the family almost €200, had only been on the grave for two weeks before the unscrupulous thieves struck.

A member of the family said they didn’t know if the stones were taken because they were valuable, and those who stole them could sell them on, or because those responsible wanted them for another grave.

“Our mother died in January and we just wanted to do a nice job on the grave,” a family member said. “We are very upset but hopefully somebody saw something.”

Anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity recently at Brigown Cemetery is asked to contact Mitchelstown Garda Station at (025) 84833.
