An environmental group has lashed out at Avondhu region councillors who criticised a ruling blocking development on the River Blackwater.

As revealed by The Avondhu last week, councillors including Deirdre O’Brien, Kay Dawson and Frank O’Flynn, reacted with anger as building work could not take place on the banks of the waterway as any such work would endanger the freshwater pearl mussel. 

Padraic Fogarty of The Irish Wildlife Trust (IWT) has lashed out at the comments and said that Government must prevent Cork County Council’s efforts to bypass the ruling.
