Those driving on the ‘old road’ between Fermoy and Mitchelstown will no doubt have seen a large development of solar panels in a field adjoining Kilworth Camp, the latest in a series of energy efficiency projects being undertaken at the camp.

The 234 ground-mounted solar panels have been installed on the south side of Liam Lynch camp outside Kilworth, and when brought into active use, will produce 100kW of energy. The panels are the first ground-mounted ones to be installed in the defence forces premises nationwide and have a 10kW back-up battery, as well as two energy diverters for hot-water storage.

While the camp uses a lot of energy – for example, the quietest day on camp, Christmas Day, will still use about 20kW – they are making strides in terms of energy conservation and reducing their carbon footprint. Last Thursday, The Avondhu was on-site for a tour of the energy saving projects, with engineer work sergeant Joe Brazill leading the way.
