The big red flames of the SG1 nightclub that caused huge controversy back in the day, have now become a memory of the past as the prominent building on Ashe Quay underwent a major painting job earlier this week.

The property, which is now under new ownership, has received a much more subtle tone and many locals are relieved to see the change.

The new owners were approached by the Fermoy Tidy Towns Committee earlier in the year and were advised to apply to Cork County Council for the painting scheme.

Their application was accepted, as was the application for the Vodafone building on Patrick Street and both jobs are very nearly complete.

Chairperson of the tidy towns committee Cllr Noel McCarthy, thanked Municipal District Officer Pauline Moriarty, SEO Mary Hayes and all the council staff, for granting an allocation to the owners of the SGI and The Abbey building and also the owners of the Vodafone building under the painting scheme.

“These are two prominent buildings in the town and I’m delighted to see the painting works being done,” said Cllr McCarthy.
